The United Nations is another important entity that has a broad international influence on environmental and conservation affairs. The UN is neither a private organization nor a government agency. You might call it a hybrid between the two because it is influenced both by many non-governmental organizations and of course by the governments of the world which are its members. The primary environmental agency of the UN is the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) www.unep.org, which is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Another UN agency that has been prominent in the news lately is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) www.ipcc.ch, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, which recently won the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore Jr. There are many other UN environmental agencies involved with environmental and conservation issues. To see some of these agencies, check out our directory of UN environmental agencies www.earthdirectory.net/UN.
